Alex Koch is one of the Teaching Artists working in residency with the students and staff of Discovery Academy with support from MSAP grant. Alex uses photographs and video in combination to create "narrative film, video installations, and theatrical projections." This is cutting edge technology that is being used daily and represents a quickly growing job market. The editing and animation techniques that our students are learning by participating in this residency are being used in movie trailers, commercials, and television all the time. This residency will combine this work with the Theatre Ensemble’s production of My Fair Lady.
The award winning AHS Theatre Ensemble, under the leadership of Ward Dales, will be producing My Fair Lady April 26th-29th. As part of the vision for the show Ward wanted to work with Alex, with whom he had worked on Capital Repertory Theatre’s production of 33 Variations. Under Alex’s guidance, our students and staff are helping to create Ward Dales’ vision for the set– which will be a theatrical projection of digital images. The projections that are being developed will not only allow for a taste of London to be brought into the AHS Auditorium, but for a visualization of the mental journey that the characters of My Fair Lady undergo. At the heart of this story is a discussion about classism, and how we perceive one another. Ward, Alex and the students will guide the audience through this journey in song, dance, and image.
This last week Alex worked with students in Sharon Morrill’s photography classes, and Mark Sickler’s advanced video production class. The students did a lot of work with Photoshop and an animation program called After Effects to begin developing the images for the set. Some of the images being used have been taken by students in Sharon Morrill’s photography class, bringing a taste of our locale to the set, and some come from the Library of Congress and other Copyright free sites. Our faculty members welcomed Alex and were excited to work with him, our students quickly began asking if Alex would be returning to class the next day. Working with high school students is a new experience for Alex and he expressed how excited he was to be working with our students and how receptive they were to learning and executing the projects they developed this week. The work will continue through this month and into March. The AHS Auditorium will have four high-powered projectors installed, which will be run by one high-powered Mac and a program called Isadora. Our students will also learn how to use this program, which will combine the Photoshopped images and the animated collages of After Effects.
Alex will return to continue his work with our students and staff in late March, and again in April for the run of My Fair Lady. For more information on Alex and the work that he does please visit: www.alexkochdesign.com.
