Bhawin Suchak is a local film maker and has been working with the students and staff of Discovery Academy since January. He is working with students in Tom Vacanti’s science class, Ward Dales’ Theatre Arts class and Mark Sickler’s video production class and there are plans to work with a few more teachers. Bhawin, the students, and faculty and are engaged in making short films.
During Vacanti’s science class, students are in small groups creating videos on scientific topics. Some are creating skits, some are creating photo montages with voice overs, and some are combining both techniques. In the video production class students are working on documentary film-making; in Theatre Arts, the entire class is involved in creating one film about the Pygmalion effect. All of the students are engaged in the various aspects of film-making, all of which involves and supports the skills that students need to be successful in school.
When students are engaged in this film-making process, they are engaged in activities that lend themselves to all classrooms. Students must engage in research on a topic, and they must translate that research and the goals of the project into a script which also involves elements of organization and narration. Students must consider how to present this material orally and visually. Films are not made in isolation. The group work here allows for students to explore various roles, including: writer, editor (script and visual), director, actor, camera crew, sound editing & mixing. This also works towards the 21st Century Skills of collaboration and communication.
